McCormick Shatters Speed Record at NMD

HarrisSmithNMD Photo: Brad Harris of Mesick, currently 8th in Bracket II points standings with the “Red Baron”454 BBC dragster, lines up against Joe Smith, III of Traverse City. Smith holds down the 12th position for the 3Js Performance “Gone Green” Mustang.

Saturday’s MiCellularClinic points event #9 provided all the excitement that was anticipated and then some. Race fans could see the Kaleva Days fireworks over at the Kaleva Village Park, which is about 3 miles south of the end of the strip. Racing action was similarly as explosive with over 140 race entries for the second-straight event.
Jeremy McCormick of Fountain yet again shattered the track record for speed with his dragster. On his first pass of the evening, McCormick uncorked a 4.23 seconds 1/8 mile elapsed time at a blistering 172 miles-per-hour reading.
Pro Systems Bracket I action found McCormick’s daughter, Madisyn, in the final round against the points leader, Corey Mikus of Bear Lake. Mikus took the win with his Chevy Camaro. Madisyn moved from 14th position up to 7th with her dragster’s runner-up finish. Her top speed was quite impressive as well, topping 145 mph.
The Absolute Auto Repair Bracket II standings also saw some drastic shifts in position. Andrew Heinig of Interlochen notched his first career win and moved from 12th all the way up to 4th with his Dodge Dart. Another Chevy Camaro racer, Cliff Mardlin of Kaleva took runner-up and improved from 9th to 5th.
Auto Body Complete Pro Trophy found Kristina Mardlin back in the winners’ circle with her Chevy S-10 victory. She also improved a position, moving into second place and only 22 points behind Benzonia’s Jim Evans. The Street Trophy win was captured by Beulah’s Phil Gunther.
The Reid Valve Dyno Rider class win went to Lake Ann’s Brent Wright on a Yamaha snowmobile. Force Engineering Junior class victory was earned by Cody Marlatt from Bailey. Marlatt moved from 7th to 4th in the standings.
Racers have this weekend off, as NMD prepares for the largest event of the season. The Stokes Auto Repair/VyperGraphics 19th Annual Mopars Against the World will take place July 29th and 30th.

Bowtie Challenge Returns to NMD

The trash talk has been going on for over a year. But now it’s time for the rematch. Racers are eager for this weekend’s 6th Annual Bowtie Challenge. The event is sponsored by Heiges Performance and Heiges Body Shop.

A special attraction is sponsored by Hlavka Heating and Cooling. The “Top Doorslammer Shootout” is taking place Saturday night, with qualifying sessions both Friday night and Saturday, to determine the quickest 8 full-bodied entries. A champion will be determined after three rounds of heads-up, Pro-tree racing!

In last season’s annual event, Chevrolet “Bowtie” racers matched up against competitors 354 times. The final score was tallied at 177 wins apiece.

Last year’s crowd exceeded 1,600 people in attendance. NMD is anticipating over 2,000 this weekend, with racer entry numbers expected to be over 300 total entrants, battling it out for over $25,000 in prize money.

Early Testing/time trials are scheduled for Thursday from 8 pm to 10 pm, with a “Run for the Money” competition to wrap up the evening.

Friday’s time trials will begin at 4 pm and eliminations scheduled for 7 pm. Saturday’s time trials start at 2 pm and eliminations slated for 5 pm.

June 8, 2016 Press Release

NMD photo: A third generation racer, 8-year-old Isaac Mikus of Bear Lake approaches the starting line with his junior dragster. He is currently in 7th place in the NMD Force Engineering Junior division. His father, Corey Mikus, is leading the Pro Systems Bracket 1 points standings, while his grandfather Steve Mikus is in second.
Racers are hoping to get plenty of racing action in this weekend, after last weekend’s rain put a damper on MiCellularClinic Points Event #4.
NMD has added a Friday evening Tune and Test event due to popular demand, to precede Saturday night’s Points Race #5. This will be the final race weekend for racers to get ready for the 6th Annual Bowtie Challenge on June 24th and 25th.
Track promoter Brian Ledford said “Basically the racers aren’t getting the number of passes down the track they have been used to getting. They’ve been asking if we could put together another open testing night, and we agreed to do so.”
All racers will be welcome to make time trials from 6 pm to 9 pm Friday. After 9 pm until approximately 11 pm will be street legal vehicles only.
Saturday evening’s bracket race will feature time trials beginning at 5 pm and eliminations planned for 8:00 pm. NMD has been contacted by TV 9 and 10 about filming at the track Saturday night, along with other possible dates, including the exciting possibility of live coverage at the 6th Annual Bowtie Challenge.
NMD is located three miles north of Kaleva on Potter Road. For further information, visit and follow the Facebook page. Call (231)362-3439 for more info.

NMD Points Event #4 this Saturday

NMD PHOTO: The John Williams Racing ’72 Challenger is driven by Mike Stokes of Kaleva. The Mopar entry was one of four Bracket I semi-final finishers who agreed to split the purse Saturday night. With only 3 of 19 races completed, Stokes currently is in 6th place in the standings.

With a stellar turnout at last weekend’s 2nd Annual Bonfire Salute, Northern Michigan Dragway racers are eagerly anticipating the MiCellularClinic Points Event #4 Saturday.
Corey Mikus of Bear Lake continued his undefeated season in Bracket I, increasing his lead in the points chase. On Saturday night, rain halted the race at the semi-finals with Mikus and three other racers still in contention. The racers voted to split the remaining purse. Sunday night’s runner-up was Travis Verrett of Harrietta.
Bracket II action found Bill Fluette taking his second victory of the season on Saturday. Runner-up was Brad Harris of Mesick. Klint Bailey of Clare took the Sunday night win in a tight race against Harrison’s Dan Snyder.
Pro Trophy had exciting racing with Benzonia racer, Jim Evans, taking the Saturday win over Martin Moore from Manistee. Jim Bacon from Luther grabbed the top honors Sunday night, with his final round victory against Kyle Kidder from Frankfort.
Junior Eliminator was dominated by Emma Helsel from Lake City, with two wins. Saturday night runner-up was Cody Marlatt from Bailey. James VanderBrook of Fife Lake took 2nd on Sunday.
Due to a large increase in race entries, NMD has announced it will start all remaining races on the 2016 schedule one hour ahead of the originally posted times. Saturday’s Points Event #4 will begin with time trials at 5 pm. Eliminations will follow two time trial sessions per class; expected to begin at 8 pm.
NMD is located three miles north of Kaleva on Potter Road. For further information, visit and follow the social media page. Call (231)362-3439 for more info.

Bonfire Salute on Memorial Day Weekend

Stoykovich had his best pass of his racing career last Saturday night with a 5.98 seconds elapsed time run at 114 miles per hour. Reid’s Arctic Cat holds the NMD snowmobile mph record at 132 mph which was set on opening day testing, April 30th.
Northern Michigan Dragway’s 2016 season schedule features five two-night weekend events. This coming weekend will showcase the first of those dual-nighters as the 2nd Annual Bonfire Salute takes place Saturday and Sunday evenings.

An added bonus to Saturday night’s event will be approximately 30-40 snowmobile racers on hand for a traveling race series known as the Michigan Snowmobile Asphalt Drag Racing Association.
Several racers from other states are expected, with one travelling from near Minneapolis, Minnesota expected to be the longest-distance competitor. The first MSADRA points event of their inaugural 2016 campaign takes place Saturday night at NMD.

At last weekend’s MiCellularClinic Points opener at NMD, four racers emerged as division leaders going into this weekend’s second and third points events.
Corey Mikus took the Bracket I points lead with his victory over Robby Girven in an all Bear Lake final round. In Bracket II, Bill Fluette of Interlochen topped South Boardman racer Perry Daniels.
Pro Trophy action found Kristina Mardlin of Bear Lake outlasting the field, with Jim Evans of Benzonia settling for a runner-up finish. In Junior Dragster, it was Parker Cesaro of East Jordan victorious over Emma Helsel of Lake City.
In Street Trophy, Robert Knop took the win trophy, with Amber Vandewater getting runner-up.
The Cicero’s Pizza reaction time contest was won by Fred Schwedt of Cheboygan with a .003 reaction time in the first time trial session.
Gates open Saturday at 12 pm. Time trials will begin at 5 pm Saturday and 6 pm Sunday, with eliminations planned at 8 pm each night.

NMD Prepares for Points Opener

NMD Photo: Paul Adomaitis of Idlewild heats up the tires on his ’65 Mustang earlier this season at the opening day test ‘n tune.  After a strong start in 2015, keeping in the top 10 through the first four events, Adomaitis finished in 31st place as his entry suffered some mechanical issues late in the season.

Due to the cold and rainy/snowy conditions, last weekend’s season opener bracket race at NMD was postponed to this Saturday. A much better weather forecast has been predicted.
Race fans are expected to see an excellent turnout, as the pre-season testing days, April 30th and May 7th drew about 180 racers.
The track will be open for testing Friday from 6 pm to 10 pm. Saturday’s MiCellularClinic points event #1 will have time trials starting at 6 pm with eliminations set to begin at 8 pm.

Drag Racers Car Show planned at Cadillac Sands

Approximately 25-30 drag racers will be showing off their race machines Friday May 27th at the Cadillac Sands Resort. Expect to see many drag racing cars, dragsters, junior dragsters, and even asphalt race-converted snowmobiles. Several of the racers have planned to have autographed photos available featuring their race machines.
The event is being promoted by Northern Michigan Dragway in Kaleva.
NMD track promoter, Brian Ledford, says “It’s going to be a fun get-together for some of our Northern Michigan Dragway racers. We have a big event scheduled that weekend for Saturday and Sunday evening, and the Friday show will be a nice start to the weekend.”
The show will take place from 5 pm until 9 pm. There is no cost to attend.

Fantastic Opening Day Turnout at NMD!

NMD photo: Bob Vandewater of Cadillac races his ‘71 Dodge Challenger against Coldwater’s Kip Burkhardt, who’s driving a Ford-powered dragster.
Racers and fans alike had been anxiously awaiting the Saturday April 30th season opener for several months. Coming off a record-breaking season in all attendance categories, Northern Michigan Dragway started the 2016 season where it left off the previous year.
Over 200 spectators were on hand, to watch 93 race entries participate in Saturday’s opening day test and tune event. The previous best turnout for opening day had been 65 entries.
The newly-poured concrete starting line performance came around quickly. The fastest dragster was driven by Kip Burkhardt of Coldwater, running the eighth-mile in 5.03 seconds elapsed time (E.T.) at a top speed of 137.34 miles-per-hour with his Ford-powered entry.
Frank Piltz of Cadillac had the quickest door slammer entry, as his 90 Pontiac Firebird performed a best pass of 5.31 E.T. and topping out at 137.37 mph.
The fastest snowmobile pass was made by Mike Brown of Traverse City with a 2017 Arctic Cat, 5.93 seconds at 132.10 mph.
Racing action will continue this Saturday with another test and tune scheduled from 2-6 pm. The following Saturday, May 14th will be the first bracket race event of the season with time trials set to begin at 6 pm.
