The trash talk has been going on for over a year. But now it’s time for the rematch. Racers are eager for this weekend’s 6th Annual Bowtie Challenge. The event is sponsored by Heiges Performance and Heiges Body Shop.
A special attraction is sponsored by Hlavka Heating and Cooling. The “Top Doorslammer Shootout” is taking place Saturday night, with qualifying sessions both Friday night and Saturday, to determine the quickest 8 full-bodied entries. A champion will be determined after three rounds of heads-up, Pro-tree racing!
In last season’s annual event, Chevrolet “Bowtie” racers matched up against competitors 354 times. The final score was tallied at 177 wins apiece.
Last year’s crowd exceeded 1,600 people in attendance. NMD is anticipating over 2,000 this weekend, with racer entry numbers expected to be over 300 total entrants, battling it out for over $25,000 in prize money.
Early Testing/time trials are scheduled for Thursday from 8 pm to 10 pm, with a “Run for the Money” competition to wrap up the evening.
Friday’s time trials will begin at 4 pm and eliminations scheduled for 7 pm. Saturday’s time trials start at 2 pm and eliminations slated for 5 pm.

NMD PHOTO: The John Williams Racing ’72 Challenger is driven by Mike Stokes of Kaleva. The Mopar entry was one of four Bracket I semi-final finishers who agreed to split the purse Saturday night. With only 3 of 19 races completed, Stokes currently is in 6th place in the standings.
With a stellar turnout at last weekend’s 2nd Annual Bonfire Salute, Northern Michigan Dragway racers are eagerly anticipating the MiCellularClinic Points Event #4 Saturday.
Corey Mikus of Bear Lake continued his undefeated season in Bracket I, increasing his lead in the points chase. On Saturday night, rain halted the race at the semi-finals with Mikus and three other racers still in contention. The racers voted to split the remaining purse. Sunday night’s runner-up was Travis Verrett of Harrietta.
Bracket II action found Bill Fluette taking his second victory of the season on Saturday. Runner-up was Brad Harris of Mesick. Klint Bailey of Clare took the Sunday night win in a tight race against Harrison’s Dan Snyder.
Pro Trophy had exciting racing with Benzonia racer, Jim Evans, taking the Saturday win over Martin Moore from Manistee. Jim Bacon from Luther grabbed the top honors Sunday night, with his final round victory against Kyle Kidder from Frankfort.
Junior Eliminator was dominated by Emma Helsel from Lake City, with two wins. Saturday night runner-up was Cody Marlatt from Bailey. James VanderBrook of Fife Lake took 2nd on Sunday.
Due to a large increase in race entries, NMD has announced it will start all remaining races on the 2016 schedule one hour ahead of the originally posted times. Saturday’s Points Event #4 will begin with time trials at 5 pm. Eliminations will follow two time trial sessions per class; expected to begin at 8 pm.

Stoykovich had his best pass of his racing career last Saturday night with a 5.98 seconds elapsed time run at 114 miles per hour. Reid’s Arctic Cat holds the NMD snowmobile mph record at 132 mph which was set on opening day testing, April 30th.
Northern Michigan Dragway’s 2016 season schedule features five two-night weekend events. This coming weekend will showcase the first of those dual-nighters as the 2nd Annual Bonfire Salute takes place Saturday and Sunday evenings.
An added bonus to Saturday night’s event will be approximately 30-40 snowmobile racers on hand for a traveling race series known as the Michigan Snowmobile Asphalt Drag Racing Association.
Several racers from other states are expected, with one travelling from near Minneapolis, Minnesota expected to be the longest-distance competitor. The first MSADRA points event of their inaugural 2016 campaign takes place Saturday night at NMD.
At last weekend’s MiCellularClinic Points opener at NMD, four racers emerged as division leaders going into this weekend’s second and third points events.
Corey Mikus took the Bracket I points lead with his victory over Robby Girven in an all Bear Lake final round. In Bracket II, Bill Fluette of Interlochen topped South Boardman racer Perry Daniels.
Pro Trophy action found Kristina Mardlin of Bear Lake outlasting the field, with Jim Evans of Benzonia settling for a runner-up finish. In Junior Dragster, it was Parker Cesaro of East Jordan victorious over Emma Helsel of Lake City.
In Street Trophy, Robert Knop took the win trophy, with Amber Vandewater getting runner-up.
The Cicero’s Pizza reaction time contest was won by Fred Schwedt of Cheboygan with a .003 reaction time in the first time trial session.
Gates open Saturday at 12 pm. Time trials will begin at 5 pm Saturday and 6 pm Sunday, with eliminations planned at 8 pm each night.

After a strong start in 2015, keeping in the top 10 through the first four events, Adomaitis finished in 31st place as his entry suffered some mechanical issues late in the season.
Due to the cold and rainy/snowy conditions, last weekend’s season opener bracket race at NMD was postponed to this Saturday. A much better weather forecast has been predicted.
Race fans are expected to see an excellent turnout, as the pre-season testing days, April 30th and May 7th drew about 180 racers.
The track will be open for testing Friday from 6 pm to 10 pm. Saturday’s MiCellularClinic points event #1 will have time trials starting at 6 pm with eliminations set to begin at 8 pm.
Approximately 25-30 drag racers will be showing off their race machines Friday May 27th at the Cadillac Sands Resort. Expect to see many drag racing cars, dragsters, junior dragsters, and even asphalt race-converted snowmobiles. Several of the racers have planned to have autographed photos available featuring their race machines.
The event is being promoted by Northern Michigan Dragway in Kaleva.
NMD track promoter, Brian Ledford, says “It’s going to be a fun get-together for some of our Northern Michigan Dragway racers. We have a big event scheduled that weekend for Saturday and Sunday evening, and the Friday show will be a nice start to the weekend.”
The show will take place from 5 pm until 9 pm. There is no cost to attend.

Racers and fans alike had been anxiously awaiting the Saturday April 30th season opener for several months. Coming off a record-breaking season in all attendance categories, Northern Michigan Dragway started the 2016 season where it left off the previous year.
Over 200 spectators were on hand, to watch 93 race entries participate in Saturday’s opening day test and tune event. The previous best turnout for opening day had been 65 entries.
The newly-poured concrete starting line performance came around quickly. The fastest dragster was driven by Kip Burkhardt of Coldwater, running the eighth-mile in 5.03 seconds elapsed time (E.T.) at a top speed of 137.34 miles-per-hour with his Ford-powered entry.
Frank Piltz of Cadillac had the quickest door slammer entry, as his 90 Pontiac Firebird performed a best pass of 5.31 E.T. and topping out at 137.37 mph.
The fastest snowmobile pass was made by Mike Brown of Traverse City with a 2017 Arctic Cat, 5.93 seconds at 132.10 mph.
Racing action will continue this Saturday with another test and tune scheduled from 2-6 pm. The following Saturday, May 14th will be the first bracket race event of the season with time trials set to begin at 6 pm.
